Praise for the Kingston, NY Guided Chaos School...
"I'd like to pass along a few grateful words about my instructor, Joe Martarano, of the Kingston Self Defense Club.
I have been attending Joe's Guided Chaos classes once or twice a week, for the last five or six months. Now, due to work conflicts and a shoulder injury (incurred during a basketball game, not a class !) I'll need to curtail my training, at least for the time being. (I had never intended , or would be able to, devote too much more time to the training anyhow- and had explained to Joe my intention of just getting a decent acquaintance with the basics of the discipline).
I'm sure this abbreviated approach is far from ideal - and likely frustrating for an instructor , yet Joe has been unfailingly supportive and patient in all regards. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his obvious respect for the Art, and the Masters that continue to teach him, resonates with beginners like myself and provides a kind of gravity as well as an understanding of the escalating levels of expertise that the training involves.
There were many instances where the most fundamental exercise or rudimentary step and punch maneuver would somehow elude me, but Joe was never less than gently encouraging - and if anything, more frustrated with himself for what he perceived (falsely, of course) as a shortcoming on his part to effectively explain the approach.
He has been generous with his time and his tapes, and flexible with my schedule (while dealing with a demanding work schedule of his own). In spite of the relatively short time i\'ve been training with Joe, I feel that were an unavoidable confrontation to occur while I was with my family (which was the concern that prompted my initial call), that I will be much more focused and effective in protecting them - and certainly better able to anticipate and avoid a potential confrontation in the first place - than I had been before.
I find the Attack the Attacker philosophy and the Guided Chaos approach both fascinating and effective, and I\'m grateful to Joe Martarano for his passion and guidance in this discipline."
